The Ron Ames Golf Open – 2022

The fourth Ron Ames Open golf tournament took place on the last weekend of August at the Stowmarket Golf Centre. A superb afternoon’s golf was followed by a lovely meal at the local Shepherd and Dog pub in Onehouse.

As well as a wonderful afternoon’s golf, the event raised £1000 for the Ron Ames Memorial Sports Fund, set up in memory of a great local sportsman to provide funds to encourage, motivate and support young members of the sports clubs in the Stowmarket area.

Although the golf is the main attraction, the afternoon has always been about far more than that – and this year’s event was no exception. The generosity and spirit of all of those involved, was second to none and Ron would have been proud to see such a wonderful group of people, not only celebrating his name, but also raising money for the fund that has been set up in his memory.

From the start everybody was in generous mood. Duncan Burl, owner of the golf centre slashed his green fee for participants, officers of the charity funded various prizes and the £100 cheque for the winners, the Shepherd and Dog landladies and staff turned up trumps
with a lovely meal at a very reasonable cost, and further cash donations were made after the event. Six young players who had  travelled up from London had a ‘whip round’ which added £250 to the day’s profits, the Shepherd and Dog, on top of their wonderful hospitality added a donation, an individual player threw in another £500 and two of the winning team have made it be known to the officers of the charity that they wish their share of the prize money goes to buy a trophy for the event, to be awarded annually.

The trustees of the charity would like to publicly thank all of those involved in this extremely successful event.

The golf day proved to be a super event with only three shots separating the field of eight teams. The highest score of the day (using a Texas Scramble format) was level par, while the winners of the event came in three under with the remaining six teams on either one or two under. The winners from last year’s covid hit tournament (Team Fornham) had to pass the trophy over to this year’s winners (D.E.B’s) from Norton who scored the impressive three under.

The winner of the nearest the pin magnum was Ollie Richards (The Youths) playing from a team of London based youngsters while the second magnum went to Dave Goff (Stowmarket Golf Centre team) for his longest drive of the day.

It was a superb day of golf and awareness-raising for the work of the charity.
